Black cumin (Nigella) is an annual plant genus that includes approximately 14 species from the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). Black cumin is an annual herbaceous plant and grows from its seeds. It likes sandy, loose soil and requires water until the flowering period and then it is not watered. Its seeds mature in cones (capsules), just like in the poppy plant. Its seeds are 2–3 mm long, have 3 surfaces, and are non-matte black in color. It is not a very oily seed. Fat content is 18%.
